Man-Pack Radars: The Advanced Portable Solution for Protecting Warfighters

What is a Man-Pack Ground Surveillance Radar?

A Man-Pack Radar or Man packable radar is a COTS (commercial off the shelf) advanced military radar system designed for warfighter protection through long-distance ground surveillance. These man-portable systems, such as the Tactical Radar Kit™ (TRK™) from Spotter Global, provide long-range capabilities for detecting and tracking moving targets.

The lightweight, portable configuration allows operators to easily deploy the radar system virtually anywhere, making it suitable for all mobile combat operations or other mobile missions. The mobile radar kit operates on a rechargeable, portable battery that can be recharged through portable solar panels as well as a vehicle or other power, making it versatile and functional for deployment in various operational environments.

The main purposes of these man-portable devices are to detect and track threats with precision and provide essential situational awareness to military forces. The range and horizontal angle of the system depends on which radar model the customer chooses for inclusion in the kit. Spotter offers solutions suited for almost any situation including flat or mountainous, open or cluttered environments. All radar systems offer effective wide-area monitoring, offering operators a constant stream of real-time data and the ability to respond to potential threats swiftly with maximal precision, speed, and adaptability.

Definition and Key Features of Portable Radar

TRK systems are compact, low SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power Consumption) devices designed for ground surveillance and target recognition. These systems provide detection capabilities for people and vehicles, making them essential for special forces operations, especially when warfighter teams must defend temporary locations against approaching threats or move cautiously through unfamiliar, unsecured territory.

With long range detection of over 1500 m to track a person that extends up to three times the range of most military rifles (500 m), these mobile field sensors can effectively monitor the simultaneous movements of multiple targets including vehicles, approaching infantry, and other threats.

The radar alone, however, doesn’t do all the work. A ruggedized tablet interface clearly displays real-time target locations to the operator, with a direct wired Ethernet connection between the radar and the tablet. The operator’s ability to detect threats in a wide area allows them to make better tactical decisions, conduct covert operations, and perhaps even call in effective artillery support.

These systems are powered by ruggedized military batteries that can be easily recharged in the field, providing extended operational time. The absence of moving parts in the TRK ensures reliability.

The radar system is designed to pinpoint various targets, including crawlers and medium-range threats. This versatility makes a single one-man portable radar an invaluable tool for modern military engagements.

How TRK Radars Work

Equipped with Range-Doppler technology, these radar units utilize azimuth, size, and speed data to accurately identify relevant targets. Utilizing Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radio waveforms and finely-tuned antennas, these devices monitor the terrain for movement, ensuring that any target is detected and tracked efficiently, even in mountainous regions.

Targets are identified based on electromagnetic radio waves, which are invisibly emitted from the TRK and bounce back upon encountering an object. This allows the radar to monitor fast as well as slow movement and provide real-time data. Generally, the TRK is capable of spotting and tracking walkers at a range of up to 1.5 kilometers and vehicles past 2.4 kilometers.

Applications of Compact Surveillance Radar

Compact Surveillance Radar (CSR) systems are essential for various applications, including border security and military operations. With the ability to pick up and track objects at significant range, these radars ensure situational awareness in real-time. High-risk locations and warfighter teams in remote areas can particularly benefit from these devices as they can effectively monitor areas, and respond swiftly to potential threats or tactical opportunities presented by the enemy’s movements..

Moreover, CSR technology enhances disaster management by providing critical data during emergencies. The TRK’s capabilities may support law enforcement and public safety agencies in maintaining order and protecting communities, especially in remote locations and during temporary, unique, and high-risk situations. The same radars used in the TRKs are used in “bear-dar” systems to protect Canadian civilians, preventing encounters with wild polar bears

How Does Range-Doppler Technology Improve Detection Performance?

The Threat Detection Advantage of Range-Doppler Radar Surveillance Systems

Simply put, Range-Doppler radars are not susceptible to the same types and degrees of interference that other security monitoring systems are. Rather than relying on light, heat, or radio-broadcast signatures, which can be more easily interfered with, Range-Doppler radar systems rely on relatively low-frequency radio waves.

These waves travel at the speed of light, even in the darkest conditions, and bounce off the physical matter of targets, returning just as quickly to the radar with valuable information about the target's size, speed, and trajectory. Ground clutter and tiny water particles are ignored, allowing the radar to reliably detect the real moving threats in a wide area of observation even if those areas are obscured by the weather.

Best-in-Class Performance in Various Weather Conditions Compared to Other Technologies

Darkness and environmental obscurants can block camera views, especially at long distances. Heat flares, reflective materials, and specialized thermal-signature-concealing materials can interfere with thermal cameras’ detection capabilities and even night vision views.

Man-portable Range-Doppler radars like the TRK operate reliably in any and all weather conditions, including rain, snow, fog, dust, heat, cold, or low light conditions.

What are the Key Features of the TRK?

Specifications and Capabilities of TRK

TRKs are made-to-order, typically including in each unit the client's choice of one of Spotter Global's C Series Military Grade radars, all of which operate on a secure X-band military frequency. Different C Series radar models have different ranges, the shortest range available being 250 m.

In addition to the selected radar unit, TRKs typically include all of the following:

  • A military backpack with camouflage patterning for either desert, forest, or snow conditions
  • A 63-inch tripod
  • Two 15-foot connection cables
  • One Panasonic Toughpad
  • One or more six-hour rechargeable military batteries

TRK's Role in Modern Surveillance

The TRK is used by modern mobile warfighter teams around the world to secure temporary locations against approaching threats. Use case examples include warfighter teams guarding convoy routes, encampments, temporary headquarters in urban or rural environments, critical infrastructure sites, and holding positions in battlefield terrain or contested ground.

As Spotter Global sensors have proven useful in tracking walkers, crawlers, vehicles, polar bears, small boats, swimmers, drones, and a wide variety of other targets, there is a possibility of TRKs being used by law enforcement, private security, and other groups in the future.

What are the Advantages of Lightweight Surveillance Solutions?

Portability and Deployment in the Field

Portability is crucial for ground monitoring systems. Operators have to be able to deploy equipment swiftly in various terrains in order for said equipment to be “worth its weight”. The flexibility of portable solutions enhances operational efficiency and, in the case of the built-for-mobility TRKs, ensures effective monitoring across any areas that need to be monitored for the current mission.

To this end, the TRK is designed to be low SWaP and extremely fast and easy to set up or take down. The full TRK system including radar, tripod, power source, and operating interface can be unpacked and set up or disassembled and repacked in less than fifteen minutes, with in-field training only taking about thirty minutes.

Effective deployment in the field is essential for maximizing warfighter mobility, threat detection, and survival. Real-time data collection and analysis just a few minutes earlier can make a vital difference in tactical decision-making. Robust, portable systems facilitate the rapid responses often needed to counter emerging threats on dynamic battlefields.

How Far Can Man-Portable Radars Detect Targets?

Understanding Detection Ranges of Manpackable Compact Surveillance Radars

Understanding the available range of portable radars is crucial for effective monitoring and threat detection. These systems utilize advanced technologies to enhance their detection capabilities, allowing operators to assess environments accurately. Evaluating factors such as terrain, weather, and the characteristic movement patterns of particular target types is essential for optimizing radar performance.

Long-Range Capabilities of Portable Radar Systems

Portable radar systems offer impressive long-range capabilities for effective all-terrain monitoring. These systems can spot and track various targets over extensive distances, up to 1.5 km, providing critical situational awareness. With advanced technology, their adaptability enables deployment in diverse environments, ensuring comprehensive monitoring of areas where traditional security monitoring may fall short.

Factors Affecting Detection Distance

Several factors influence the detection distance in mobile military surveillance operations. Environmental conditions, such as weather and terrain, play a crucial role in visibility. Additionally, the technology used, including sensor sensitivity and resolution, can significantly impact the effective range at which objects can be spotted.

Human factors, such as operator experience and situational awareness, also contribute to detection capabilities. The presence of obstacles and background noise can further limit the detection distance, making it essential to optimize all elements for enhanced threat detection.

How Do Man-Portable Radars Enhance Battlefield Operations?

Integration of Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar

The TRK is a surveillance radar, not necessarily a target acquisition radar. That is to say that acquired targets are not necessarily to be attacked or even targeted.

The TRK is designed to go to those places and mansions where larger long-distance (multiple kilometers) target acquisition radars, often integrated with artillery systems, cannot reach because of ground clutter or other interference. Remember, equipped with Range-Doppler technology, these radars can effectively minimize interference from ground clutter to improve target detection.

Once TRK operators have detected live threats within their wide-area monitoring zone, they may choose to attack, hide and continue to monitor, call in infantry reinforcements, call for an airstrike on their detected targets, or pursue any number of other tactical responses. The TRK provides information on an otherwise difficult-to-monitor area and the operator decides what to do with that information. The flexible fusion of various situational-awareness supporting technologies enables soldiers to make the best decision for their current objectives and circumstances.
