This is achieved through a small, lightweight radar unit mounted on the side of a building, on a pole, tripod, or other suitable infrastructure. The small radar unit sends out several radio wave pulses per second. These radio waves travel over the monitoring area, bouncing off any objects in their path, and bounce back to the radar antennae with information about anything moving in the target area, including information about the size, speed, and direction of the moving object(s), allowing the AI-enabled radar software to reliably determine the nature of each of the detected objects. This is useful, as it allows the radar system to differentiate between true threats, usually human, drone, or vehicle targets, and nuisances such as harmless wildlife, birds, tumbleweeds, and wind-tossed foliage. The breadcrumb tracking feature allows for precise target monitoring, ensuring that the radar software can paint a clear picture of their path through the monitoring area.

The "live" targets are listed in order of longest-present to most recent. This arrangement typically places the greatest threats to border security at the top of the list seen by the system user, allowing border security decision-makers to prioritize their responses when responding to intruders. 

Active Security System Equals Better-Used Time for Security Personnel

One of the best things about these systems is that even when remotely deployed (see below), they don't require a distant, connected-over-the-air security employee to be constantly watching the data stream shown on the radar interface. The system can, when targets meet certain parameters (for example when a human, drone, or vehicle target enters a top-priority alert zone), provide immediate alerts to security personnel. But apart from these urgent notifications, most security personnel interaction with the interface will involve reviewing the recorded footage/target detection history of the system. 

The arrow image representing sort order, the aforementioned prioritized list of detected targets shown on the radar system interface, is configurable by target type, duration, distance, alarm-zone entrance, and other behavioral filters. This configurable list enables quick navigation through recorded footage, making it easier to find critical moments.

Additionally, and in another point similar to radars, thermal cameras can operate in various weather conditions, ensuring reliable monitoring at all times. 

What Are In-Ground Sensors? And How do They Assist in Detecting Threats? 

Sometimes called "unattended ground sensors" or UGS, ground sensors are small, often cylindrical devices that are either placed on the ground or shallowly buried. These devices sense the vibrations and disturbances in the surrounding area that are caused by on-foot or vehicular intruders. Some ground sensors use acoustic or infrared detection. 

These discretely placed sensors are used in perimeter security, battlefield monitoring, border surveillance, pipeline protection, and target acquisition. They can also integrate with command and control interfaces. However these systems only work like a digital trip wire when something passes close by them and they do not track threats over large areas like compact radars do.

Drones play a crucial role in enhancing border surveillance by providing a bird's-eye view of vast areas that are otherwise difficult to monitor. Their ability to easily ascend and descend in altitude and thus cover large distances of varied terrain quickly allows for real-time data collection and rapid response to potential threats. Drones can be particularly helpful in guarding large border areas with lots of elevation changes. 

Equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensors, drones can detect unauthorized crossings and monitor environmental changes. These advantages enable border agencies to maintain security and manage resources more efficiently.

How Are Drones Being Used In Illegal Border Activity (And What to Do About It)

Border criminals have drones of their own. From small-scale smuggling to surveillance efforts supporting illegal immigration to explosive-laden drones (like those being used in the border conflicts between Ukraine and Russia and in the Middle East), drones are increasingly key tools for those intent on violating international borders and international law. 

Along the U.S. southern border, for example, drones are in plentiful use by Mexican drug cartels attempting to smuggle fentanyl across the border. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gloria Chavez has said, "The adversaries have 17 times the number of drones, twice the amount of flight hours, and unlimited funding to grow their operations." How are these drones to be combatted? In addition to employing long-range ground surveillance radars and radio frequency sensors to detect ground threats, border security agents can maintain domes of airspace 360° coverage with AX250 radar systems, which are specifically designed to detect and track "dark drones" through any environmental conditions.

As for drone mitigation, radio jamming is currently a key method for stopping hostile drones from completing their missions. Hard-kill methods exist as well but can be difficult to execute reliably. However, the more connected and commonplace these systems become, the more potential ingress points cybercriminals will have to target.
